NGC 6823 is an open cluster of the type I3pn in the constellation Fox in the northern sky . It has an apparent magnitude of 7.1 mag and an angular diameter of 7 '. The cluster is located 6,000 light years away within the emission nebula NGC 6820 near Messier 27 . It is about 50 light years in diameter and is estimated to be 2 million years old.
The object was discovered on July 17, 1785 by William Herschel .
