The Dumbbell Nebula (also called Messier 27 or NGC 6853 , from English also Dumbbell Nebula ) is a 7.5  mag bright planetary nebula with an area of 8.0 × 5.7 arc minutes in the constellation Fuchs . It is just visible in the binoculars, and further structures can be seen in the telescope. The central star is a white dwarf of 14 mag and a temperature of over 100,000 Kelvin . The distance is around 1400 light years . It got its name from Sir William Herschel because of its elongated shape. The nebula expands at 6.8  arc seconds per century . The dumbbell nebula was discovered by Charles Messier on July 12, 1764.

Appearance

Under a dark, clear sky away from large cities, the PN (Planetary Nebula) can already be seen in good binoculars as a star-like object. The dumbbell shape of the nebula can already be identified with telescopes with an opening of 10 cm. However, only larger telescopes from 20 cm aperture show finer structures. The halo surrounding the PN can only be seen photographically with normal amateur telescopes.
