Barnard's Galaxy (also known as NGC 6822 and IC 4895 ) is an 8.7 mag bright irregular dwarf galaxy with an area of 15.4 '× 14.5' in the constellation Sagittarius . It's about 1.6 million light years away and about 8,000 light years in diameter.
The dwarf has about 10 million stars (Milky Way: 400 billion stars) and 150 star formation areas, which can be seen in the picture on the right as red "bubbles". The galaxy is a member of the local group .
Although Barnard's galaxy is one of the 50 brightest galaxies in the sky, it is difficult to observe in Central Europe because of its low surface brightness and its southerly position.
The name of this galaxy refers to Edward Emerson Barnard , who discovered it as a foggy object on August 17, 1884.
