Mookhophong , formerly Naboomspruit , is a place in the South African province of Limpopo . He belongs to the municipality of Modimolle-Mookgophong in the District of Waterberg .

In 2011, Mookhophong had 24,853 residents. Around 56 percent said North Sotho was their mother tongue. The place is in a flat area in the south of the Waterberg . Modimolle is around 42 kilometers southwest , and Mokopane is around 51 kilometers northeast .

history

The town was founded in 1907 on the area of ​​the Fischgat farm under the name Naboomspruit, named after the plant Euphorbia ingens , which belongs to the genus milkweed . In 2006 the city was renamed. Mookgophong was the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name until 2016 .

traffic

Mookhophong is close to the N1 , which connects Pretoria in the southwest with Polokwane in the northeast. The R101 runs roughly parallel to this and runs through Mookgophong, but branches off to Modimolle in the southwest. The R519 leads southeast and then northeast to Moletlane , the R520 runs a short distance to the northwest.

Mookhophong is on the Pretoria – Polokwane – Beitbridge railway , which is operated in freight traffic. A branch line to Zebediela was closed.
