Nachschon (infantry battalion)

The Nachshon Infantry Battalion ( Hebrew נַחְשֹׁון) is an infantry battalion of the Israel Defense Forces trained in urban warfare , whose job it is to patrol the Nablus area of the West Bank . The battalion's motto is “Be first, Nachschon”. It is named after Judah Nachshon and belongs to the Kfir Brigade ( Hebrew חטיבת כפיר, Chativat kfir).

Nachschon was founded in November 1998 and reformed as a battalion from 1999–2000 . Its founding commander was Lieutenant Colonel Yoram Loredo. It lost six men, including four officers, during the second intifada . It is one of six such battalions that have been monitoring separate areas in the West Bank since the 1990s to prevent suicide bombings and to maintain order. The current commanding officer is Lieutenant Colonel Tamir Shalom.
