history

Former chapel in Naděje

Naděje probably originated when the glass industry was being built in the Lusatian Mountains . The first written record is found in 1612. The name of the place can probably be traced back to a tunnel of the same name driven into the mountain. In 1874 entrepreneurs from Dresden built a factory for processing millstones; the raw material was quarried in the mill quarry on Milštejn . Between 1937 and 1938, the Naděje ( Hope ) dam was built north of the village in the deep Hamerský potok valley . It was used to collect the water and to drive a mill and a board mill . The dam is 91.6 meters long and made of phonolite . 11,600 m³ of water are dammed. The reservoir is no longer used for water management purposes, but serves as a bathing lake (because of the cold water only for the intrepid). In 1991 the place had 12 inhabitants. In 2001 the village consisted of 40 houses in which 11 people lived. Today Naděje is a summer resort and has little tourist importance due to the lack of overnight accommodation. However, the place is popular with day trippers.
