Nagercoil ( Tamil : நாகர்கோவில் Nākarkōvil [ ˈnaːɡərkoːʋil ]) is a commercial and industrial city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is the capital of the Kanyakumari district . Around 225,000 people live in the city (2011 census), predominantly Hindus and Christians. Tamil and Malayalam are the most important colloquial languages.
Nagercoil is located in the lowlands between the southern foothills of the Western Ghats and the coast of the Indian Ocean , only 16 kilometers northwest of Cape Comorin , the southernmost point of the Indian mainland. This makes it the southernmost city in India. The closest major city is the Kerales capital Thiruvananthapuram around 65 kilometers northwest of Nagercoil. The Palayaru River flows through Nagercoil .
Nagercoil was formerly known as Kottar . The present name derives from an ancient Jaina -Sanctuary ago, the Nagaraja Temple. The temple, whose name literally means "Lord of the Serpents" (cf. Naga ), is now a Hindu sanctuary. In the Middle Ages, Nagercoil was under the rule of the Chera , Chola and Pandya . In the 18th century the Dutch tried to colonize the area around Nagercoil, but were defeated in 1741 in the Battle of Colachel by the forces of the Keralesian kingdom of Travancore . Nagarcoil remained formally part of Travancore until India became independent in 1947, but from the end of the 18th century it was under the sovereignty of the British East India Company and from 1858 British India . After independence, the city belonged to the state of Travancore-Cochin . Due to its predominantly Tamil population, however, it was assigned to the newly founded state of Madras (now Tamil Nadu) in 1956.
Nagercoil is an important regional trading center for agricultural products from the fertile surroundings. The industry also relies on the processing of agricultural products, especially rubber, cotton, coconut fiber and food. 61 percent of the population of Nagercoil are Hindus . There is also a larger minority of Christians (30 percent) and a smaller Muslim minority (9 percent). The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Kottar and the diocese of Kanyakumari of the Anglican Church of South India . The Catholic cathedral is said to date back to 1600. It is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier , who worked in the area of Nagercoil in the 16th century and also houses the tomb of the beatified martyr Devasahayam Pillai . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
