Nan'ao ( Chinese 南澳 鄉 , Pinyin Nán'ào Xiāng , Tongyong Pinyin Nán-ào Siang , W.-G. Nan-ao Hsiang ) is a community in the Yilan County of the Republic of China in Taiwan . The residents are mostly the indigenous people of the Atayal on.
With 740 km², Nan'ao is the largest municipality in terms of area in the district of Yilan in northeastern Taiwan and occupies its southern part. It is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean . The municipality belongs to the central mountains of Taiwan , which extend here to the sea. In the southwest of the municipality, the mountains in Nanhubeishan ( 南湖 北山 ) reach an altitude of 3535 meters about 35 km from the sea.
The coast road Su'ao - Hualien and the parallel railway line run through Nan'ao . There are four train stations in the municipality. Most of the settlements of Nan'ao are located along the road and rail line near the coast, while the impassable central and western part of the municipality is hardly inhabited. The main town Nan'ao is located in the northeastern part of the municipality near the border with Su'ao.
