Nananthus is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the ancient Greek words νᾶνος nanos for "dwarf" and ἄνθος anthos for "blossom" or "flower" and refers to dwarf flowers that are not present.

description

The plants of the genus Nananthus grow compact. Its beet-shaped, thick, succulent roots are edible. The upright or spreading to lying, dark green, white-spotted leaves are oblong to triangular and more or less smooth on the upper side. Their underside is bumpy at the top. The surface is rough and has warts similar to the leaves of the genus Aloinopsis . In the bumps there is a thin layer of calcium oxalate , which gives the leaves their white-speckled appearance.

The flowers stand individually on bracts that are almost as large as the leaves. There are five sepals . Their petals are striped yellow and red to purple-red and darker striped. Sometimes they are also pure yellow. The stamens always form a flat cone in the middle with white stamens and mostly yellow anthers . The nectarium is designed as a dark green ring.

The capsule fruits are similar to those of the genus Delosperma . The light to dark brown, almost spherical seeds are 1.4 to 2 millimeters long and 1 to 1.6 millimeters wide.

The chromosome number is .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Nananthus is distributed in the southeast of Botswana , in the east of Namibia and in South Africa in the northeast of the North Cape Province and in the south of the Northwest and Free State provinces . The plants grow on plains or slopes with fine clay. The annual rainfall exceeds most of 300 millimeters. The precipitation falls mainly in summer.

The first description was published in 1925 by Nicholas Edward Brown . The holotype is Nananthus vittatus . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Nananthus includes the following species:
