Narrenhäusel at the Augustus Bridge at the end of the 1930s

Narrenhäusel is the name of a former restaurant in Dresden . It was located on the Neustadt bank of the Elbe on the opposite side of the blockhouse on the Neustädter bridgehead of the Augustus Bridge in the residence of the elector jester Joseph Fröhlich . It burned down in World War II and was demolished in 1950.

The Narrenhäusel is to be rebuilt largely true to the original by the private investor Frank Wießner for 3 million euros by the end of 2021 . The city of Dresden sold the property to him in January 2020. In March 2020, a panel of experts selected a design by the architect Martin Trux as the winner, which ties in with the time it was created.

The name "Narrenhäusel" is derived from its well-known resident, the court jester of the Saxon Elector Friedrich August I. Fröhlich also referred to his house on Neustädter Markt as "Narren-Palais" or, based on Moritzburg Castle, as "Little Moritzburg". The building was popularly referred to as "glasses" because of the two octagonal elbows on the wings.

The four-storey building was built in 1755. According to a legend, Fröhlich wanted to block his neighbor's view of the Elbe because he had to move out of his previous domicile in the neighboring building.

After the building was rebuilt in 1935/1936, a functional building that could be used for catering was built. The “Narrenhäusel” restaurant was opened at Pentecost 1937. The building burned down during the air raids on Dresden and was demolished in 1950.

Today the garden restaurant "Augustusgarten" is located at the location of the Narrenhäusel. A small bronze sculpture by Heinrich Apel from 1978 commemorates the house .

Reconstruction plans

The Society Historischer Neumarkt Dresden is committed to the reconstruction of the fool's house. The condition for the reconstruction is the demolition of the pedestrian underpass at Neustädter Markt , which has been closed since the Elbe flood in June 2013 , this demolition was decided - regardless of the plans for the Narrenhäusel - on January 22, 2015 with the votes of the CDU and the Greens in the Dresden city council. The rebuilding of the Narrenhäusel was decided in the Dresden city council on March 17, 2016. During the renovation of the Augustus Bridge in October 2018, remnants of the wall of the Narrenhäusel were found.
