The province of Cagliari is the main growing area of Nasco

Nasco is a very old autochthonous white wine variety from Italy and is cultivated on the Italian island of Sardinia . It is recommended to cultivate them in the provinces of Cagliari , Oristano and Sassari . The main cultivation area is the flat land and slight slopes near Cagliari . In 1999 a planted vineyard area of 219 hectares was raised. First mentions from the 13th century suggest that the current name comes from the word nuscu , which is a reference to the light nutmeg aroma after it is fully ripe.

The vigorous and late-ripening variety produces golden yellow white wines with almost 16% alcohol by volume and a slight residual sweetness of 12 to 20 g / l. It becomes the example of the liqueur-like DOC - wine Nasco di Cagliari used.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is white woolly to almost tomentose, white-greenish with a slightly reddish tinge. The green young leaves are only hairy like a cobweb.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and only slightly curved. The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set medium-wide compared to other grape varieties.
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is medium-sized, mostly shouldered and with loose berries. The round to slightly elliptical berries are medium-sized and yellow in color, which changes to a slightly amber color when the berries are fully ripe. The berries have a thin skin and have a slight note of nutmeg in the taste when they are fully ripe.

The grape variety ripens about 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late in international comparison.

The variety is hardly susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew , has little tendency to trickle and copes well with the drought in the summer months.

The yields are medium to high, so that targeted vine training must be used to reduce the yield in order to achieve good wine quality.
