Natalie Toth Sandtorv (born August 17, 1988 in Ålesund ) is a Norwegian jazz and improvisation musician ( vocals , also harmonium , electronics , songwriting ) who has also emerged in the field of avant-garde pop .

Live and act

Sandtorv studied jazz, improvisation music and electronics at Norges musikkhøgskole in Oslo and at Griegakademiet in Bergen. After studying in Norway, she went to Berlin for almost a year and has lived in Copenhagen ever since.

Sandtorv founded in 2011 in Bergen, together with the noise musicians John Hegre and drummer Thore Warland the band polygon Junx , which published an album and appeared in Switzerland and Norway 2012th In the same year they also played a concert at Det Norske Studentersamfunn in Oslo with Marte Eberson and Kjetil Møster .

Sandtorv then became best known as the singer of the band Morning Has Occurred , which went on tour in 2013 (with Karl Seglem ). In the same year she gave her first concerts in Norway, Poland and Berlin with her future husband Ole Mofjell in the duo Not on the Guest List . She performed at Festspillene i Bergen with a solo project for voice and electronics . At Julejazz 2013 in Ålesund she played in a trio with the brothers Christian Skår Winther and Andreas Skår Winther. Sandtorv toured Europe in 2014 with Morning Has Occurred with Marte Eberson. The band also took part in the Vossajazz and JazzIntro competition and received good reviews for their performances. With Eberson and Mofjell she formed the trio Coco ( The Dance Upon My Grave , 2016).

On the duo album The Jist (2014) with noise guitarist Torgeir Standal, Sandtorv orientated himself on the collaboration of Sidsel Endresen with Stian Westerhus as well as the sound world of Maja Ratkje . In 2015 she released her first solo album Pieces of Solitude . In 2015 Sandtorv released the album Pieces of Solitude under her own name . In the same year she continued to perform in a duo with Steve Beresford at Blow Out! Festival in Oslo. In 2017, the album Freedom Nation followed , which was considered an independent and strong expression of Sandtorv. She also played in the group Mimosa with Els Vandeweyer and Rieko Okuda.

Prizes and awards

Sandtorv was honored in 2016 as Sparebank 1 Jazz Talent at Moldejazz .
