National newspaper (Berlin)

The National-Zeitung appeared in the Soviet zone of occupation since March 22, 1948 , with its reporting intensively prepared the foundation of the National Democratic Party of Germany (NDPD) on May 25, 1948 and became its central organ on September 12, 1948 . It has been one of the daily newspapers in the GDR since the state was founded .

The block party NDPD saw itself as a collecting basin for democratically and nationally minded citizens, especially the former Wehrmacht officers , followers of the NSDAP and National Socialism as well as representatives of the middle class and the so-called intelligentsia . To put it simply, the GDR's NDPD can be described as conservative, while the LDPD was considered liberal.

As another newspaper close to the NDPD, the Mitteldeutsche Neuesten Nachrichten came out from July 14, 1952 with a circulation of 18,500 copies in the region between Halle , Leipzig and Magdeburg ; the Saxon Latest News appeared in the regions of Dresden and Karl-Marx-Stadt ( Chemnitz ).

Further regional newspapers of the National Democratic Party of Germany were subsequently created with the Thuringian , Brandenburgische (today Potsdamer Latest News , united with the Tagesspiegel ) and North German Latest News , which together reached a circulation of 103,000 copies.

Like all newspapers in the GDR, the National-Zeitung was subject to the censorship of the state leadership. The reporting was similar to that of all other organs until the late 1980s. In the immediate period before the fall of the Wall, the NDPD stayed out of political discussions more than other bloc parties.

The National-Zeitung appeared since February 1990 as Berliner Allgemeine and was later merged with the LDPD newspaper, Der Morgen , whose publication was discontinued in June 1991.
