National Research University of Russia (NIU, Russian Национальный исследовательский университет России Nazionalnyj issledowatelskij uniwersitet Rossii ) is a status that universities are awarded on a competitive basis for both ten years of operation and revocable research for a period of ten years of operation.

The competition was held by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. Withdrawal of status

The universities report regularly on the status of the program. The status can be withdrawn.

The National Research Universities project was launched on October 7, 2008. In the same year the President of the Russian Federation issued the ukase “On the implementation of the pilot project for the establishment of national research universities”. In the same ukase, the National Nuclear Research University (Moscow Institute of Technical Physics) and the National University of Research and Technology MISiS were the first to be awarded the status of a National Research University.

On July 13, 2009, the government of the Russian Federation issued a decree to initiate open competition among Russian universities for the status of National Research University. The official start of the competition was on July 31, 2009. 28 finalists were selected from the 110 applications. On October 17, 2009, a commission selected the 12 winners.

On February 5, 2010, a Prikas was issued on the implementation of a second competition. There were 128 participants in this competition. From the 32 finalists, a commission selected 15 universities that should receive the status of a national research university. The list was approved by the government on May 20, 2010.
