Sodium orthovanadate is an inorganic chemical compound of sodium from the group of vanadates and is one of the well-known sodium vanadates along with sodium metavanadate and sodium pyrovanadate .
Extraction and presentation
Sodium orthovanadate can be obtained by reacting vanadium (V) oxide with a sodium hydroxide solution free of sodium carbonate .
It can also be made by fusing vanadium pentoxide with sodium carbonate.
properties
Sodium orthovanadate is a white solid that is soluble in water. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group Pnmb (space group no. 53, position 2) . The high temperature form has a cubic crystal structure with space group P 2 1 3 (space group no. 198) .
use
Sodium orthovanadate is used to inhibit tyrosine phosphatases , alkaline phosphatases and ATPases . Sodium orthovanadate is usually added to phosphatase inhibitor cocktails in concentrations between 0.1 and 1 mM .
