Balgarka Nature Park

The Balgarka Nature Park ( Bulgarian , Природен Парк Българка) is a Bulgarian nature park on the northern side of the Balkans (Stara Planina). It covers an area of ​​22,000 hectares in the central and eastern area of ​​the mountains between the cities of Gabrovo and Kazanlak .

The region lies at the transition from the Central Balkans to the significantly lower slopes of the mountains. The area is characterized by a great variety of terrain. This makes it home to a very diverse flora and fauna . In addition, there are many historically interesting sites in the area of ​​the nature park.

The area was designated as a nature park on August 9, 2002 due to its historical and biological importance.

From a zoological point of view, the park is located in the European Balkans region.

Many wild animals, such as the Eurasian wolf , foxes , the golden jackal , the European brown bear , wild boar , red deer , roe deer , hares , the southern white-breasted hedgehog , squirrels , badgers , mink live in the forests of Bulgarka Park. Among the Vöglen the region are the golden eagle , the kestrel , rock pigeons , woodpeckers , black woodpecker , green woodpecker , the cuckoo , the buzzards , various owls , the wagtails , turtle doves , jays , magpies , blackbirds , starlings , nightingales , orioles and great tits worth mentioning. The region's reptiles include three species of snakes and lizards. Amphibians include several species of frogs and salamanders, invertebrate snails and many different insects. Fish in the region include trout .

About 80% of the area of ​​the nature park is covered by forest, which corresponds to 17,461 hectares. Different types of beech form the main part of the tree population. You can also find oak , hornbeam , linden , elm , acacia , poplar , maple , ash , bird cherry , birch and other tree species. Various types of pine , spruce and fir trees grow on conifers in the area of ​​the nature park . Bare-seeded plants cover about 0.6 hectares of the park area.

At least 360 plant species, including 31 endangered or critically endangered species, including yew trees, Gesneria family and Bulgarian orchid species, grow in the area of ​​the nature park. Since the nature park is comparatively young, there is no definitive list of all species available.

This diversity of fauna occurs in Bulgaria only in this area and makes the park a habitat worthy of protection. There are individual areas within the Balgarka Nature Park that have therefore been given a higher protection status. Almost 70% of the officially recognized medicinally effective plants in Bulgaria are native to the Balgarka Nature Park.

There are significant cultural and historical sites, such as in the field of the natural park Balgarka Shipka , the Sokolski Monastery , the dryanovo monastery , as well as the open-air museum Etar .

tourism

The Usana winter sports area is located in the Balgarka Nature Park. This area of ​​high mountain meadow has been used for tourism since the 1930s , there are 15 hotels there that are open all year round.
