The Western Rhönwald nature reserve is a 44.41  hectare nature reserve in the Hessian community of Hilders in the Fulda district . The area is designated as a core zone in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . In addition, the nature reserve lies within the much larger EU bird sanctuary Hessische Rhön (identifier DE-5425-401). As a result, the areas are part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas in the Hochrhön FFH area with the identification 5525-351.

Location and dates

The Western Rhönwald nature reserve is 3.5 km west of Hilders, directly on the border with Thuringia . In Thuringia, Oberweid is 2 km northeast and Frankenheim is 3 km southwest . It can be reached via dirt roads that branch off from the Hessian state road L3176 between Hilders and Frankenheim. In the east the nature reserve borders on the NSG Rhönwald, which was designated as early as 1967 on the other side of the former inner German border , with a size of 134 ha ( WDPA ID 165169).

In the area of the NSG there is an average annual precipitation of around 950 mm with an annual average temperature between 5 and 6 ° C. So it is relatively wet and cold there within the Rhön.

The primary protection goal there is to preserve and secure a mountain forest rich in beech and hardwood in the transition area between the middle and upper mountain areas. Both core zones are characterized by basalt from volcanism , which is deposited in a shell limestone plinth. In addition to the protection of the forest ecosystem, according to the ordinance of December 7, 1997, the scientific observation of the succession processes and their documentation are of importance for the designation as NSG. The initial phase in the time without human intervention is of particular interest.

history

The Thuringian NSG Rhönwald was designated as a core zone as early as 1990 shortly before reunification by the GDR government as part of the GDR national park program and was left as such when the Rhön biosphere reserve was designated in 1991. In 1997 the NSG Westlicher Rhönwald was also designated directly adjacent to it. When, in 2007, further core zones of up to a minimum of 3% of the total area became necessary to maintain recognition as a biosphere reserve, the Rhönwald NSG was one of the proposed and newly designated areas.

flora

The Western Rhön Forest is completely forested except for a forest meadow and the strip along the former zone border. The former border strip has been left to succession since 1990 and in the meantime a bush and tree population of birch , willow and quivering aspen has developed. Summer-flowering perennial plants such as are Türkenbundlilie , wood anemone , Carex sylvatica , Great chickweed , Hedge Woundwort and forest Bingelkraut be found there.

The onion tooth root beech forest dominates as a type of forest . On smaller areas, it is supplemented by block-rich maple-linden- scree forest and a small alder swamp forest . The soil in the NSG is mostly acidic and, besides the common beech, mainly sycamore maple and ash and, more rarely, Norway maple and mountain elm grow on trees . In the herb layer there are primarily bush anemones , great balsam , onion toothwort and witchweed . In some places there are lush stocks of wild garlic . Existing tall herbaceous plants such as plane-leaved buttercup , silver leaf , monkshood and shiny chervil complement the plant community.

fauna

Deciduous forests with a high proportion of dead wood, as found in the unused core zones, are a valuable habitat for birds such as the black , spotted , green and gray woodpecker and also for the nuthatch and the wood warbler . Bats also find undisturbed retreats there.
