Navoiy or Nawoj (in the Uzbek-Cyrillic spelling Навоий; Russian Навои Nawoi ) with its 117,600 inhabitants (1999), is the capital of the Navoiy province in southwest Uzbekistan . It is located at an altitude of about 380 meters above sea level. The city of Navoiy is independent and at the same time the capital of the Navoiy district of the same name .
Navoiy is about halfway on the Buxoro - Samarqand railway , shortly after Tinchlik , from where the line to Urganch connects. Navoiy has an airport which , in addition to a few passenger flights, is particularly important for Korean Air Cargo's freight traffic between Europe and Asia.
history
Originally, the city was known under the name of Karmana during the Emirate of Bukhara . In 1958 she was re-established and got the name of the famous Uzbek poet and politician Ali-Shir Nava'i (Uzbek Alisher Navoi ), which in the 15th century Persian and Tschagataisch the court of the Emir Hussein Boykara in Herat wrote.
economy
The region has large deposits of natural gas, precious metals and building materials. The city is the seat of the state-owned gold mining and metal smelting company Navoiy kon-metallurgiya Kombati (Navoi Mining & Metallurgical Combinat) . The company NavoiyAzot is the largest fertilizer producer in Uzbekistan .
