Nazanin Boniadi (born May 22, 1980 in Tehran ) is an Iranian - British actress who currently lives and works in the United States .

Life

Boniadi was born in the Iranian capital Tehran. Her parents moved her to London when she was a baby. As a young girl she played the violin and danced ballet .

After graduating from school, she moved to the United States, where she received an Honors degree in Biology from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). At UCI, she won the Chang Pin-Chun Undergraduate Research Award for molecular biology research related to cancer treatments and heart transplants . She was also assistant editor-in-chief of the UCI's medical student newspaper, MedTimes .

Boniadi had a relationship with Tom Cruise from November 2004 to January 2005 , which was very much influenced by Cruise's religious community, the Church of Scientology . In 2010 she decided to leave Scientology after claiming she was treated unfairly by several senior members. In 2012 she recorded a rap song with other former Scientologists expressing criticism of Scientology.

Career

In 2006, Boniadi decided to quit her scientific career and started acting. Her first big role was that of Leyla Mir in the soap opera General Hospital and in the spin-off General Hospital: Night Shift . She became the first Iranian-born actress to sign a US soap opera contract. For this role she was nominated for a 2008 NAACP Image Award .

Boniadi also had supporting roles in several major Hollywood productions such as Charlie Wilson's War , Iron Man and 72 Hours - The Next Three Days . From February 2011 she took on the role of Nora in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother , in which she has a relationship with Barney Stinson (played by Neil Patrick Harris ) over several episodes . In November 2011, she appeared in a commercial for Nespresso with George Clooney .

In the third and fourth season of the award-winning US series Homeland she took on the role of the CIA - analyst Fara Sherazi . In January 2020, she was cast for Prime Video's planned Lord of the Rings television series.

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
