geography

The village has the shape of an extended Rundweiler, which is about five kilometers west of Weißenberg and two kilometers south of the federal highway 4 . The Necherner pond area extends east of the village.

North of Nechern, the Kotitzer water flows in a westerly direction. The Kuppritz water coming from the south flows into it in front of the neighboring village of Wurschen .

history

The Sorbian farming village was first mentioned in documents at the beginning of the 15th century, including as Necherin (1413 and 1415), Necheryn (1418) and Necherein (1421). Possibly the place name goes back to a German colonialist Necher , who took over the village during the German settlement in the east . There was evidence of a manor in the early 16th century, later it was merged with the neighboring Wurschen manor.

In the Great Northern War in 1706, the Swedish King Charles XII stayed. briefly in Nechern, whereupon a memorial stone, the Schwedenstein , has been commemorating since 1810 . According to statistics from Arnošt Muka, 187 of the 190 inhabitants of Nechern at that time were still Sorbs in 1884/85 , while the official statistics for 1925 show a Sorbian-speaking proportion of 82.4%. In 1956, according to Ernst Tschernik , a slim majority of 56% was Sorbian-speaking. Since then, the use of the language has continued to decline.

The somewhat larger neighboring village of Wurschen was incorporated into Nechern in 1936. The community was renamed Wurschen in 1957 and incorporated into Weißenberg on March 1, 1994.
