Spittel , in Upper Sorbian , is a district of the Saxon town of Weißenberg in the east of the Bautzen district with about 50 inhabitants
geography
The highest district of Weißenberg is located in the Upper Lusatian region on the northern slope of the Wohlaer Berg (Byčin) . Neighboring villages are Nostitz in the northeast, Krappe in the east, Wohla behind the mountain in the south, Breitendorf in the southwest and Zschorna in the west. Bundesstrasse 178 runs east of Spittel .
history
The small Rundling was first mentioned in 1345 as a hospital and three years later as the manor of a Herman von der Spital . The manor ruled from the 16th to 19th centuries by the Nostitz manor. The inhabitants belonged to the Kittlitz parish at least since the 16th century , but from 1679 they belonged to the Nostitzer parish. The children from Spittel also went to school in Nostitz, where they were also taught Sorbian until the 20th century .
During the battle for the Wohlaer Berg as part of the Wars of Liberation , a field hospital was set up in Spittel at the beginning of September 1813, which Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte visited on September 5th .
Population and language
According to the statistics of the Lusatian Sorbs by Arnošt Muka , Spittel had a total of 161 inhabitants in the mid-1880s, 148 of them Sorbs (92%). In 1956, according to Ernst Tschernik, only 31.2% of the population were Sorbian-speaking. Since then, the language has disappeared from the village.
