Nerses Bedros XIX. ( Armenian : Ներսէս Պետրոս ԺԹ. Թարմունի; * January 17, 1940 in Cairo , Egypt ; † June 25, 2015 in Lebanon ) was Patriarch of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate of Cilicia .

Life

The patriarch came from a family with eight children and received his education with the Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes in Cairo. From 1959 he studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome as a member of the Papal Armenian College .

He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1965 in Cairo . From 1965 to 1968 he worked as a pastor in Cairo and from 1968 to 1990 in Heliopolis . Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Alexandria of the Armenian Catholic Church. He received his episcopal ordination on February 18, 1990, the Patriarch of Cilicia, the Armenian Johannes Bedros XVIII. Kasparian ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Cilicia, André Bedoglouyan and Vartan Achkarian .

On October 7, 1999 he was elected Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenians (official title) with his seat in the Bzommar monastery near Beirut and on October 24, 1999 as Nerses Bedros XIX. enthroned. Pope John Paul II of Rome confirmed his ecclesiastical fellowship on December 13, 1999. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as a member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches .
