The New Town Hall of the Bavarian city of Erlangen was built between 1969 and 1971 according to the plans of the Nuremberg architect Harald Loebermann . The modern, functional building is part of the administration and business center Neuer Markt .
history
Since around 1960 there have been plans to build a new administrative and business center south of the historic old town for the up-and-coming city of Erlangen. After Horten had already built a large department store there in 1965, the Neuer Markt project was implemented between 1969 and 1972 according to the plans of the architect Heinrich Loebermann from Ansbach . At the same time as the town hall, a congress center (originally called the town hall , later renamed Heinrich-Lades-Halle ), a hotel , two shopping centers and a parking garage were built in the immediate vicinity . The first construction phase of the town hall opened on October 6, 1971, the second around a year later. The construction costs totaled around 19 million D-Marks .
In the years 2002 to 2005 the town hall was completely renovated. This had become necessary because damage occurred in particular to the concrete parts of the facade. The Nuremberg architect Wolfgang Loebermann, son of the builder Heinrich Loebermann, was responsible for the work. The total cost was around 25 million euros . Since the renovation, 16 municipal offices have been housed in the New Town Hall, one fewer than before.

With its angular and unadorned exterior and the well thought-out usage concept, the New Town Hall can be seen as a typical example of the functional architecture of the early 1970s. The ground floor, which houses the citizens' office, the post office and a large hall that can be used for exhibitions , as well as the first floor with a spacious foyer , the large and small council chamber, parliamentary groups , the mayor's offices , the mayor's and press office and the wedding hall , form a kind of base zone. A high-rise complex with 343 rooms, including 290 offices, 20 storage rooms and 11 meeting rooms, rises above it and is accessed by three elevators and a staircase. This building is divided into three different high and wide cubes of six, nine and fourteen floors, which (in that order) face south, west and east. The exterior is characterized by an exposed concrete facade, which gives the horizontal ribbon windows a uniform appearance.
