In 1934, Hanns R. Neumann began trading coffee as a broker and agent in Hamburg, according to the company . After the Second World War he became the exclusive agent for Colombian coffee for Germany. The founder's son, Michael R. Neumann, later took over the company. In 1975 the world's first green coffee silo was inaugurated in what was then Hamburg's free port (see Hamburger HafenCity ) on Sandtorkai (investment cost: 600,000 DM). In 1988 Neumann acquired the Hamburg-based competitor Bernhard Rothfos AG (founded in 1922). The Neumann Kaffee Group was formed in 1990 from the two companies and their subsidiaries. Here, Hanns R. Neumann GmbH was replaced by the company's current holding company, Neumann Gruppe GmbH. Bernhard Rothfos AG was incorporated as Bernhard Rothfos GmbH as the company's trading house. The former subsidiaries of the two companies now form part of the 49 companies in the Neumann Kaffee Group.

In 2004 David M. Neumann succeeded his father Michael R. Neumann as spokesman for the management (today: CEO of NKG), while his father became chairman of the supervisory board. In 2008, every seventh coffee bean worldwide was traded by the Neumann Coffee Group.

In 2005 Michael Neumann and his family established the independent and non-profit Hanns R. Neumann Foundation (HRNS), for which he still works today. The HRNS works independently of the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe. According to its own information, the foundation is committed to "more sustainability in the coffee industry".

criticism

The Neumann Coffee Group has been the subject of criticism for several years due to the establishment of the Kaweri plantation in Mubende . According to the NKG, the land was sold to the state of Uganda by a private owner. In August 2001, residents who refused to accept compensation payments were evicted from their homes by the Ugandan military in serious human rights violations , according to media reports . Work on the plantation began a short time later. According to FIAN human rights activists , a total of 2,000 people have been displaced. According to the NKG, there were 25 smallholders who refused to leave the claimed land.

In an official complaint in 2009, FIAN and a group from Mubene accused the NKG of violating the voluntary OECD guidelines for multinational companies . The governments of OECD member states must promote the application of the guidelines through national "contact points" and seek solutions in a confidential manner. After discussions with all those involved, the National Contact Point determined in 2011 that there was no evidence that the NKG had not "acquired the land in good faith". An out-of-court settlement was suggested to the parties.

A lawsuit from 2002 did not lead to a final judgment until 2018. The Kaweri plantation has not been UTZ certified since the beginning of 2018 . UTZ did not provide a reason for this.

On December 16, 2019, the public prosecutor's office offered financial compensation for destroyed property totaling 3.8 billion Ugandan shillings (around 950,000 euros) at the trial in Kampala . In addition, she wants to reimburse 150 million schillings in procedural costs, equivalent to around € 37,000. The condition for this compensation is that the case is completely and finally settled. The Neumann Kaffee Gruppe has not yet made any offer of compensation. 325 of the 401 plaintiffs stated in writing that they would accept the public prosecutor's offer of compensation. The High Court in Mubende should explain the compensation offer to the 76 plaintiffs, whose position was not available to the court, in order to enable a decision based on this information.
