The house Neustädter Kirchhof 7 is a Grade II listed building in the town of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in the historic Quedlinburger Neustadt on the east side of the Neustädter Kirchhof and is registered in the Quedlinburg monument register as a residential building. To the north is the also listed building Neustädter Kirchhof 6 . A passage from Neustädter Kirchhof to the convent leads through this building directly at the northern gable of number 7.

Architecture and history

The half-timbered house was built according to a dendrochronological study in 1422/23. and is one of the few remaining half-timbered buildings in Quedlinburg from the late Gothic period . It is said to be the second oldest secular building in the city. Other details give the year 1432, probably incorrectly. It represents a mixture of floor construction towards the street and courtyard-side multi-storey construction with mortise locks . This unusual mixed construction can still be found in the houses of Konvent 20 and Marktkirchhof 5 in Quedlinburg . The no longer existing building at Schmale Strasse 53 was also constructed in this way.

The house Neustädter Kirchhof 7 has profiled arches that support the protrusion of the upper floor and bracing . The uprights of the street-side facade rest on a swell , which lies on a sandstone base . The swell was no longer available in the 1990s and was completely replaced. The threshold of the house is decorated with a wide bevel. On the side of the upper floor, in the area of the transition to the roof, small lugs have been inserted. The compartments were filled with a mesh of stakes and clay.

In the interior of the house, the ceiling beams are stiffened by means of sheet-covered headbands.

During the Baroque period , changes were made to the right part of the ground floor. Originally the house had a door with a crown in the form of a keel arch .

In the 1970s the house was pulled out and fell into disrepair. During construction work on the neighboring house Neustädter Kirchhof 8 in 1993, house number 7 was found to be heavily infested with dry rot . In 1994 a new owner acquired the house and initially had the urgently required renovation work carried out on the southern gable. In 1994/95, students at the Institute for the History of Architecture and Art at the University of Hanover made a precise survey of the building, researched the history of the building and presented a graphic reconstruction. Based on this, a detailed renovation plan was made with the aim of safeguarding the existing building and restoring the lost parts of a storey wall on the courtyard side. The planning was promoted and implemented. During the work, other areas affected by the sponge were discovered several times. The affected components had to be replaced. The facade was largely preserved in its original form. With the help of some preserved remains of an originally existing lime plaster, a former color design of the facade could be restored. The framework is painted dark. In addition, there is a dark comma in the compartments, which serves to make the wood look wider and more regular.

In the courtyard facing the Konvent street there is a free-standing two-storey half-timbered house built around 1700. It is only separated from the front building by a small courtyard measuring 1 by 2.5 meters. The threshold of the building is chamfered in the Baroque style . There are also profiled fillers . The compartments are partially provided with decorative brickwork. It has large window openings.
