The Neutor is an old gate in the northwest of the Nuremberg city wall , southwest of the Nuremberg Castle .

The Neutorturm is one of the four distinctive, round main towers of the Nuremberg city fortifications, its old name is "Grün K".

The Neutor was one of the four main gates of the Nuremberg city fortifications, was mentioned as early as 1377 and led via St. Johannis (Nuremberg) to Fürth , Würzburg and Frankfurt am Main . It was built next to the older zoo gate ; the gate tower was originally a forework.

In 1564 the tower was encased and the old outwork replaced by the Neutorbastei .

The outer gate building of the Vorwerk has the old designation "Green L". In the 19th century, pedestrian passages were added to the outer gate.

The wall area between Hallertor and Tiergärtnertor is called Neutormauer . Thereafter, the street Neutormauer , located within the city wall, and the main thoroughfare Neutorgraben outside, were named; also the Neutorstrasse leading to the gate , which used to be used for all long-distance trade, and the Neutorzwinger .

In the Neutorzwinger (between Haller- and Neutor) a medicinal herb garden was laid out, which is open to the public in the warm half of the year. A door at the Neutorzwinger leads to the northern fortifications with the mayor's garden and the castle bastions .
