Neverland - Journey to the Land of Adventure is a British-American fantasy and adventure film that tells an alternative story to Peter Pan and James "Jimmy" Hook. The film was made under the direction of director Nick Willing, who also wrote the script here, and was produced as a two-part feature film for British and US television in 2009. It was first broadcast on December 4, 2011 by the US TV broadcaster Syfy . In Germany a decision was made against splitting it into several parts.

action

The action begins in London in the early 20th century. The orphan boy Peter Pan is forced to make a living with other street children by pickpocketing. The head of the gang is Peter's mentor James Hook, who manages the boys' daily income. On one of his raids, Peter discovers a magical sphere that, due to an accident, transports all of his friends, including Hooks, into a fantastic world of eternal youth, the legendary Neverland. In Neverland, the group of pirates is kidnapped under the leadership of their captain Bonny. Only Peter and his friend Fox were not taken because they were a bit out of the way. You decide to find the others and set them free. Before that, however, they are pursued by tree spirits, but thanks to Indians they can escape, who drive away the tree spirits with their song. The Indians take them in, but forbid them to save their friends, as they would have to pass a path through a mountain that they could previously keep secret from the pirates and that neither Peter nor Fox trust enough to show them this secret. However, the two boys secretly follow the Indians while they are hunting and thus find access.

On the pirate ship, the captain decides to throw Hook over to the crocodiles and leave the children to the boatswain, Smee. Hook manages to break free and kill some of Bonny's best men. Impressed by his abilities, she pulls him into a confidential conversation. She explains to Hook that she is looking for so-called fairy dust, which belongs to the tree spirits and could turn her into a goddess. One night Peter and Fox manage to free the other boys. Hook, who has fallen in love with Bonny and now sees no reason to leave the ship, tries to help the boys escape, but cannot prevent Fox from being killed.

Peter leads his comrades to the Indian village, where everyone is taken in with good food. After some time of recovery, he starts another attempt to get to the land of the tree spirits from here. Aaya, the chief's daughter, accompanies him. Deep in the forest they encounter a glowing elf-like creature - a tree spirit named Tinkerbell, as you will learn later. You follow him. So you get to a settlement shrouded in mystery, whose fencing and internal buildings consist exclusively of immense tendrils and woody plants. The ruler and creator of this place is Dr. Richard Fludd, alchemist of Queen Elizabeth I. He also got to Neverland once (350 years ago) with a blow on the ball. According to his own statement, he can bring Peter home because he made a second sphere fed with the energy of two meteors. In addition, he found out that Neverland is a planet on which - due to its extraordinary position in the universe - time stands still.

At Hook's insistence, they followed Peter's lead, and now they too meet in Dr. Fludd in. At the first meeting with Dr. Fludd, they see him immediately as a threat and shoot him. Peter is also fatally injured in a subsequent duel. With uncontrolled rifle volleys, the pirates unintentionally set the entire settlement on fire and take the magic ball and aaya with them. The tree spirits carry Peter into their rock cave, treat his wounds and awaken him to new life with a bath in water mixed with mineral dust. The 3 elders who rule the kingdom of the tree spirits then ask Peter to bring them the magic ball. They will then see to his return - and that of his friends - to earth. In order to be able to fulfill the mission, they gave him supernatural abilities. He can now make things happen through his imagination alone.

Under Hook's leadership, the pirates want to dare to cross the gorge to the Valley of the Tree Spirits. Peter follows them and tries to extort information about the whereabouts of the magic ball by force, showing his extraordinary abilities. But due to lack of practice and carelessness, the pirate manages to catch Peter, who, however, can help Aaya escape beforehand. Hook concludes from Peter's flying skills that he had contact with the mineral dust and can lead it there too. He wins Peter's trust through reports of Peter's origins. Thereupon Peter shows him the way to the entrance to the cave of the tree spirits. Hook has reached the goal of his wishes and is now showing his true colors again. Bonny has followed the two and now comes out of hiding with some of his followers.

In search of the mineral dust, everyone now goes inside the cave. You will find the water hole into which Peter dipped not long ago with the help of the tree spirits. Bonny can't wait and gets in first. But she is unlucky: After surfacing, it crumbles to dust because the ceremony was not accompanied by tree spirits, so Peters guess. The Indians storm the cave to chase away the pirates. Peter flees into the forest. The 3 ruling tree spirits make him forget his personality there, as he has not fulfilled his mission to destroy the pirates. Tinkerbell puts a stop to them, thereby falling out of favor, and gets help for the completely absent Peter. Aaya brings him back to the Indian village. Due to his mental condition, he behaves rudely there. So the Indians put him as a prisoner in a hole in the ground on the edge of their village.

His friends, who still live in the village, free him. After they have cured him of his amnesia, Peter tells them about the second magic bullet and immediately goes to Bull Island to get it. Ship's cook Smee told him this place was a hiding place. Hook is on the way too. Peter just has to follow him unnoticed. Once at the destination, Peter prevents his former mentor from hitting the ball and traveling back to London. Peter cuts off his hand in a sword fight. Just as Peter wants to fly out of the cave with the ball and the seriously injured Tinkerbell, the exit is buried by a scree avalanche. Peter was no longer seen.

When everyday life has returned to the village, Peter, who was believed to be dead, suddenly appears in fine thread. He's been in London for a while, bringing presents for his friends and making life in Neverland palatable for them. After all, they can live here without an aging process and without being regulated by adults and experience a lot of adventures, but Peter's shadow was gone.

criticism

TV feature film describes the film as an “elaborate, imaginative family spectacle”.

Martin Zopick thinks the fairy tale is not only too long, but also somewhat confusing, especially in the last half an hour. “The plot surges back and forth without any new impulses. As before, however, the huge, bombastic backdrop and the hearty tree spirits continue to impress. With the exception of Anna Friel as captain Bonny, the acting crew is quite lively and entertaining. [...] For a while, the variety of imaginations can impress you, but constant amazement is also exhausting. A little less would have been more. "

"Young actor Charlie Rowe is convincing in his role as Peter and is the acting discovery of the year."
