The New Economic School ( NES ) ( Russian Российская экономическая школа ) is a private Moscow business school that was established after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

history

The New Economic School was founded in 1992 as a private university in Moscow on the initiative of leading Russian and foreign academics and economists. In a short time, the NES has gained a reputation as a liberal and career-promoting educational institution.

In 2000, the Center for Economic and Financial Research (CEFIR) was founded within the NES , which was converted into an independent non-governmental organization as a think tank in 2005 .

On July 7, 2009, US President Barack Obama addressed over a thousand guests at the annual NES graduation ceremony .

Students and alumni

Most students have a first degree in math, physics, or economics. Around 40 percent come from Lomonosov University in Moscow, another 20 percent from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology , and 10 percent from Novosibirsk State University . 30 percent of the students are female and more than half come from outside Moscow, including many citizens from other CIS countries.

By the end of 2009, 704 young economists had graduated from the New Economic School with a Master of Arts in Economics and 22 with a Master in Finance. 450 of these graduates work in Russia, 330 of them in the private sector - mainly in international companies, investment banks and consulting. Over 250 or around 30 percent of the graduates continued their studies in PhD programs after completing the NES. B. at Harvard University , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , as well as the University of Chicago , Stanford University , Yale University , Northwestern University , Columbia University , New York University , University of Pennsylvania , London Business School and University of Toulouse .

More than 60 doctoral students work at economics faculties at foreign universities such as MIT , Princeton University , Stanford , Yale , University of California , Berkeley , Columbia , University of Pennsylvania , NYU , LSE , LBS, as well as at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund ; 21 doctoral students came back to Russia.

One of the graduates of the first year is today's economic advisor to the Russian President, Arkady Vladimirovich Dvorkovich .

The faculty members of the New Economic School represent the elite of the Russian economy at international conferences and through publication in the leading international business journals, including Econometrica , The American Economic Review , Quarterly Journal of Economics , The Review of Economic Studies , Journal of Economic Perspectives , Journal of Economic Literature , The Journal of the European Economic Association , The Journal of Finance , The Journal of Business, and The American Political Science Review .
