Nicholas Allen

Nicholas Allen (* 1947 in Leeds , England ), also: Nick Allen , is a British - Austrian theater educator , actor and director . He is co-founder of Shakespeare in Styria and lives in Vienna .

Life

After attending rugby school , Allen briefly studied at Sussex University . In 1966 he came to Vienna to continue his studies in music and performing arts . In the following year he was hired by Vienna's English Theater (VET) as an actor and remained - with a break of three years - in various functions at this institution until his retirement in 2009. From 1971 to 1994 he was on the English-language tour program of the Responsible for VET in Austrian schools, which later also appeared in southern Germany , South Tyrol , Switzerland and Czechoslovakia . This project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and the Arts . While at the beginning of the project a production was played in front of around 15,000 students every year, at the end of his period of service there were five parallel productions in English and French, which were seen by around 220,000 students in five countries.

From 1994 to 1997 Allen worked in the textbook department of the British Book Shop in Vienna. He then returned to Vienna's English Theater and was commissioned with a new project. He developed English-language theater workshops for Austrian schools, traveled all over Austria and many schools in southern Germany, and finally took on further training for teachers . In 2001 he developed a new workshop format in which he taught the British art of argument . He continues to conduct these workshops.

Together with the writer and journalist Rudolph J. Wojta , he founded Shakespeare in Styria in 2002 , an annual open-air performance of a Shakespeare play in the Styrian city of Murau . The project began modestly as a language training program for teachers and students, albeit with English-speaking actors from the outset, and gradually developed into a small summer festival with professional actors that was perceived nationwide. 2013 was played in German for the first time. In 2014 Allen staged Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in Murau , together with the American fencing teacher, stuntwoman and actress Roberta Brown .

Since 2005 Allen has been involved in the SoHo regional groups in Styria and Vienna , a social democratic working group for equal rights for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people .
