Nicholas Beggs (born December 15, 1961 in Winslow ) is an English bass guitarist , who is also known as the Chapman Stick player. He was a member of the pop group Kajagoogoo and founded the progressive rock group The Mute Gods .

Life

Beggs is the son of Herby and Joan Beggs. He has a younger sister. His father left the family and his mother died of cancer in 1979, so that he then took care of his sister. He attended Linslade Secondary School . After graduating from school, he first worked as a garbage collector .

He founded his first band, Johnny and the Martians , at the age of 10, together with two friends ( trumpet and acoustic guitar ) and Beggs himself on drums . After attending art school , he founded the band Art Nouveau in 1978 with Steve Askew, Stuart Croxford Neale and Jez Strode . Chris Hamill ( Limahl ) joined the band in 1981, which was renamed Kajagoogoo . The first single "Too Shy" was released in January 1983 followed by a promotional tour . The single reached number one in the UK charts .

Between 1985 and 1987, Beggs concentrated on writing, along with various other songwriters , and founded the pop group Ellis, Beggs & Howard in March 1987 , which separated again in 1989. Beggs joined the progressive folk band Iona in 1990 and recorded with them the two albums "The Book of Kells" and "Beyond These Shores".

Beggs also worked with various artists and bands, including Gary Numan , Alphaville , Belinda Carlisle , Emma Bunton (album "Life in Mono") and Led Zeppelins . In 1996, Beggs met Howard Jones . A friendship developed and Jones invited Beggs to tour as part of his band. Beggs also worked as an artist and repertoire manager for Phonogram Records for eight months .

He released two solo albums and an EP: "Stick Insect" (2002), "The Maverick Helmsman" (2004), "Stick Enterprises", "The Darkness Inside Mens Hearts" and 2014 "Burning Shed" - a compilation by Chapman Stick solo pieces from his two previous albums with 2 newly recorded Chapman Stick-based songs.

In February 2013 Beggs released the album "Lifesigns" with the band Lifesigns , of which he was a member.

Beggs was also a member of the Belgian band Fish On Friday , which released the album "Godspeed" in late 2014, and was also involved in John Mitchell's "Lonely Robot" (release of the album "Please Come Home" 2015 on Spectral Mornings ).

Beggs has played in his band The Mute Gods since 2014 , together with Marco Minnemann and Roger King. Their first album was released in January 2016 under the title "Do Nothing Until You Hear from Me". With the song Father Daughter , the album contains a duet with his daughter Lula. In February 2017 the second album "Tardigrades Will Inherit The Earth" followed. In March 2019, InsideOut Records released the third album Atheists and Believers . In the song One Day has Alex Lifeson a guest appearance.

Beggs has contributed to various guitar publications and is a contributor to Bass Guitar Magazine . He is also the patron of the London- based guitar and bass school Guitar-X .

Private

Begg's first marriage, which resulted in a daughter, was divorced in 1994. He has another daughter with his second wife, who brought three children into the marriage.
