Nicholas Paul "Nick" Maley (born July 17, 1949 in London ) is a British make- up artist and screenwriter . He was best known for his involvement in the creation of the Star Wars -Figur Yoda , earning him the nickname That Yoda Guy earned.

Life

Maley was born in 1949 to the actor Leonard "Len" Maley (1923–1973) and an accountant († 2005). He first grew up at Wembley ; later the family moved to Kingsbury . His father furthered his artistic skills, helped him to make first contacts in the film industry and also taught him basic knowledge of the make- up artist .

In 1969 he started working in the British film industry. He had his breakthrough in 1976 when he was able to create the masks for Star Wars in collaboration with Stuart Freeborn . In particular, he worked on the scene in the Mos Eisley Cantina , but was also involved in creating the masks of Chewbacca, Greedo and numerous other characters in the film. Maley worked for the next seven years as Freeborn's assistant on films such as Superman and Superman II - Alone Against All .

In 1980, Maley and his wife, actress Gloria Maley , wrote the screenplay for the film Seed of Evil , which was made into a film the following year, directed by Norman J. Warren . Maley was also responsible for the production as makeup supervisor and for the special makeup effects. However, the Maleys were so dissatisfied with the final film that they deleted their names from the credits.

In 1981 he was responsible for the mask of Anthony Hopkins as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame .

During the filming of The Empire Strikes Back , Maley was instrumental in creating the three Yoda characters, which were designed by Stuart Freeborn. This eventually earned Maley the nickname That Yoda Guy .

Maley was responsible for Highlander - There can only be one the effects of the beheading scenes and also designed the prosthetics for the Kurgan portrayed by Clancy Brown . In addition, the storyboards for the implementation of the Quickening scenes are from him.

In 1985, Maley retired from film production and sailed the Caribbean for a year . Then he went to Antigua and started painting . In 1987 he and his wife founded the Island Arts Galleries in Antigua , with which they mainly devoted themselves to Caribbean art. From 1990 to 1993 he was President of the Antigua Art Society. In the following years he toured the USA, Canada, England and the Dominican Republic with his exhibitions.

In 1995 he returned to Los Angeles . He has lived on Sint Maarten with his wife Gloria Maley since 2007 . There he runs the Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit museum in Philipsburg .

Maley strives to preserve the original technology behind the Yoda character and launched the Saving Yoda project in 2015 . A year later he was able to implement a fully functional Yoda figure, which he presented to the public at the Star Wars Celebration Europe in London.
