In April 2008, at the age of 13, he took part in the Jugend forscht competition with the research paper The Killer Asteroid 99942 Apophis , in which he examined the probability of a collision between the asteroid Apophis and a geostationary satellite and the consequent consequences on the probability of impact with the Earth calculated. On the day of the award, Marquardt was interviewed by the Bild-Zeitung , which then published an article with a probability that the asteroid would hit the earth in 2036 more than 100 times more than he had calculated. The international press reported thereupon in almost all countries, although Marquardt denied the representation of the Bild-Zeitung.

Since January 2013 Marquardt has been Global Advisor for Social Media at Mars One and owner of the management consultancy Rabbit . Marquardt has been a member of the supervisory board of EWP ( Energie und Wasser Potsdam GmbH ), a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Potsdam , since August 2014 .

Others

The astronomer Fred Watson on Marquardt:

“This schoolboy has done a marvelous job. A hundred years ago people used logarithms and hand-calculators and slide rules to work out asteroid orbits, […] But it says a lot for the world that we live in that a 13 year-old schoolboy can download the right software to do the job and actually find errors in Nasa's work. It is quite extraordinary. "
