Nicolas "Nico" Polychronidis ( Greek Νίκος Πολυχρονίδης , born November 8, 1989 in Bremen ) is a Greek ski jumper who competed for Germany until the 2011/12 season .
Career
Polychronidis, son of a German and a Greek, started in 2004 for Germany in FIS junior competitions. Born in Bremen, who was training at SC Oberstdorf at the time and attending the Oberstdorf ski boarding school, he quickly achieved placements among the top 20 in FIS races and started in the FIS Cup in January 2006 . After average results, in February 2006 he got the chance to take part in a competition in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup in Villach . After a 37th and a 45th place he found himself back in the team for the FIS Cup, which he finally finished with 14 points in 193rd place in the overall standings. After a few more FIS races, in which he narrowly missed the podium with fourth place in Planica in February 2007, he started again in the FIS Cup and achieved placements within the top ten from the first competition of the 2007/08 season. After he was able to improve further, in February 2009 he was again nominated for a Continental Cup jumping competition in Pragelato . There he was able to jump to third place behind Severin Freund and Danny Queck and thus achieve his first podium. He was also able to score in the second competition. After another point win in Kuusamo , he finished the 2008/09 season in 68th place overall. After the season, however, he was pushed out of the squad again by other jumpers and started again in the FIS Cup.
For the 2012/13 season , Polychronidis announced that it would start immediately for the Greek association. The Greek Association also announced that it would be the only ski jumper to plan for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 . The prerequisite for this was winning points in the 2013 Continental Cup, which he achieved on January 26, 2013 in Titisee-Neustadt . He was also the first ever ski jumper from Greece to compete in the Continental Cup.
At the FIS Team Tour 2013 , Polychronidis started for Greece for the first time in the qualification for a jumping in the Ski Jumping World Cup . He was also the first ever Greek jumper in the World Cup. With 55th place, however, he missed the required standard for jumping.
At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in the Italian Val di Fiemme Polychronidis jumped on the normal hill at the 45th rank. He was not at the start of the competition on the large hill after being disqualified in qualifying. At the two FIS Cup competitions in mid-March 2013, he clearly missed out on top places as 64th and 38th.
At the 62nd Four Hills Tournament (2013/14 season), Polychronidis also started for Greece. In all four competitions he failed in qualification, so that he was not allowed to take part in any knockout competitions. In January it was announced that Polychronidis would surprisingly be able to take part in the 2014 Winter Olympics via a replacement procedure - the points that he had scored on January 18 and 19 at the Continental Cup in Sapporo with places 24 and 21 were decisive. Also in Sapporo on January 24th, he qualified for the first time for a World Cup competition, which he finished in 40th place. The following day he was 38th. The Olympic Games in Sochi were less successful for him: He did not qualify on the normal hill (48th) or on the large hill (47th).
In the winter of 2014/15 he went to the 63rd Four Hills Tournament in the World Cup. He took part in the first three events, but could not qualify in each case.
