Nicolas-François Gillet ( Russian: Николя-Франсуа Жилле ; born March 2, 1709 in Metz , † February 7, 1791 in Poissy ) was a French sculptor and university teacher .

Life

Gillet, son of the sculptor François Gillet and his wife Catherine Michelet, studied in Paris at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Lambert-Sigisbert Adam's studio . He received a second prize in 1743 and 1745. With a scholarship he studied sculpture in Rome from 1746–1752 . For the dome of the church of San Luigi dei Francesi , he designed the stucco - Pendentif of St Augustine . In the carnival of 1748 he appeared as a janissary , as Jean Barbault recorded in a portrait . After returning to Paris, Gillet married the daughter of the architect Jean-Pierre Defrance in November 1752 . A month later he was accepted into the Académie Royale.

In 1758, Gillet traveled to St. Petersburg at the invitation of Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov and taught sculpture at the Imperial Academy of Arts, founded in 1757 . He initially had a three-year contract, but then stayed there for another 17 years. His students included Feodossi Fyodorovich Shchedrin , Mikhail Ivanovich Koslowski , Ivan Petrowitsch Martos , Fyodor Gordejewitsch Gordejew , Iwan Prokofjewitsch Prokofiev and Fedot Ivanovich Schubin . In 1767, Gillet was promoted to adjunct professor.

In 1778 Gillet resigned at his own request with an annual pension of 400 rubles and returned to Paris.

Gillet died with his daughter Élisabeth, who had married the painter Étienne de La Vallée-Poussin .
