Nicolas Dupont (organ builder)
Nicolas Dupont (born October 3, 1714 in Domnom-lès-Dieuze , † March 3, 1781 in Nancy ) was an organ builder from Lorraine .
Life
After Nicolas Dupont learned organ building, he continued his training with François Thierry in Paris. Thierry was the last representative in the third generation of a well-known organ building dynasty. On his return, Dupont settled in the village of Malzéville near Nancy. Given the high reputation he enjoyed due to his Parisian education, he could choose his customers. This allowed him to create monumental instruments like no other in Lorraine .
His brother Joseph Dupont (1721–1792) worked with him until 1765 and then established himself in Metz . In 1746 the two brothers met Johann Andreas Silbermann in Phalsbourg.
Nicolas Dupont died in Nancy on March 3, 1781. His successor was secured by the best of his many students, Jean-François Vautrin.

In France, case designs for organs without visible prospect pipes emerged from the middle of the 18th century. The aim was to make the architecture more independent of the instrument by supporting the cornice with architectural pillars. The organ from St-Sulpice (Paris) was pioneering here . The Dupont organ in the Saint-Jacques de Lunéville church was built without a prospectus whistle according to a design by the architect Emmanuel Héré . Dupont's organ in Saint-Étienne de Toul was examined by Karl Joseph Riepp on June 6, 1755 and possibly discussed this new concept with Dupont.
Dupont's most important works were all placed under the protection of the Monument historiques , if they still exist. Unfortunately there is often little more than the organ brochure .
