Nicolas Théodore de Saussure (born October 14, 1767 in Geneva , † April 18, 1845 in Geneva) was a Swiss naturalist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " NTSauss. "

Live and act

Horace Bénédict de Saussure's son received his first training from his father, whom he helped with barometric examinations when he climbed Mont Blanc in 1787. He fled to England during the French Revolution . In 1802 he returned to Geneva and was there until 1835 honorary professor of mineralogy and geology at the Geneva Academy.

In addition to chemical studies, he also devoted himself to botany . His main work, the "Recherches chimiques sur la Vegetation" (Paris 1804; German von Voigt, Leipzig 1805), was epoch-making for plant physiology , above all in that he first dealt with the questions of nutrition mainly quantitatively, but then also through mastery which he carried out his vegetation experiments and obtained certain results.

Nicolas Théodore de Saussure was a repeated member of the Geneva Council. He is the grandfather of the eminent linguist Ferdinand de Saussure . In 1808 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him a corresponding member, and in 1820 a foreign member. In the same year he was also elected a foreign member of the Royal Society . From 1808 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

Honors

The plant genus Saussurea DC is named after him and his father . from the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
