After his quite successful rookie season, however, he received little ice age and finally played his last game in 1987. He oriented himself towards Europe and had his first long-term engagement with ESV Kaufbeuren in the German ice hockey Bundesliga . After a short time at Mannheim ERC , he finally signed a contract with the Austrian first division club EC KAC , where he spent a full four seasons and was able to win a championship title with the club. Nienhuis quickly became one of the audience favorites in Klagenfurt, as apart from his attractive style of playing he also appeared as an entertainer and repeatedly appeared as a musician. Nienhuis was also granted Austrian citizenship, but he only completed one assignment with the national team and remained without points in six games.
In 1994 Nienhuis moved to Slovenia to HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , where he was one of the top scorers in the Slovenian ice hockey league and was able to win the championship title with the club in both seasons. He then returned to Germany and spent a season with the Eisbären Berlin . After a year in the British Ice Hockey Superleague , he went back overseas and completed two more seasons with the Port Huron Border Cats in the United Hockey League before ending his active career.
Musical career
During his career as an ice hockey player, Nienhuis kept flashing musical talent and performed as a singer and guitarist to the delight of the fans. In Klagenfurt he recorded a record with Dieter Themel and the Bluesbreakers, which became a big hit locally, and in Berlin his song Eisbärn became a cult, in which he added the line "Ich bin ein Eisbär in Berlin." sings.
