Nikolaus Welter

Nikolaus Welter (also Nik Welter ; born January 2, 1871 in Mersch , Luxembourg ; † July 13, 1951 in Luxembourg ) was a Luxembourgish writer , professor ( literary scholar ) and statesman .

Life

Welter studied at the Universities of Leuven , Paris , Bonn and Berlin . He then went to school and was a teacher in Diekirch and later at the Athénée de Luxembourg .

During the reign of Émile Reuter (Reuter government), Welter was Minister of Education between 1918 and 1921. He did not belong to any party.

As an author, Welter wrote dramas and poetry as well as commissioned works such as his “History of French Literature” in 1909 for the University of Marburg .

Act

Welter wrote almost exclusively in the German language . His play "Griselinde" (1901) served the Luxembourg composer Alfred Kowalsky as the libretto for his opera of the same name.

At the turn of the century, Welter's interest, in addition to topics from Luxembourg mythology and history, was primarily the literature revived by the Félibrige school in the French minority "langue d'oc", Provençal . He corresponded with well-known German Romanists such as Eduard Koschwitz and August Bertuch and traveled twice to Maillane ( Département Bouches-du-Rhône ) to see Frédéric Mistral (Frederi Mistral), the “chef de file” of this movement. As one of these German-speaking Romanists, he was not uninvolved in the efforts that led to Mistral being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904 . Welter also reports on this in his travel report “Hohe Sonnentage. A vacation book from Provence and Tunisia ”(1912).
