Niklas Rainer (born May 9, 1983 in Falun ) is a former Swedish ski racer . He started in all disciplines, competed in the World and European Cups until 2010 and achieved his best results in giant slalom and combined .

biography

Rainer drove his first FIS races in January 1999, his first starts in the European Cup followed in December 2001. In 2002 and 2003 he took part in the Junior World Championships and achieved ninth place in the Super-G and tenth place in slalom as the best results 2003. In 2003 he became Swedish junior champion in slalom. In the European Cup on December 5, 2003, he surprisingly finished sixth in the giant slalom in Ål . Before that, he was never in the top 30. He was unable to repeat this result for the time being, and only made it into the top ten a second time at the end of the season.

In January and February 2004 Rainer made his first appearance in the World Cup , but did not qualify for the second round in any race. This changed in the 2004/05 season when he surprisingly reached eleventh place on December 12th in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère . In the European Cup he achieved his breakthrough to the top this season . He celebrated two giant slalom victories, achieved two podium places and finished fifth in the giant slalom and seventh in the overall standings. In February he started at the World Championships 2005 in Bormio and reached 14th place in giant slalom, in April he won his first Swedish championship titles in giant slalom and parallel slalom.

In the 2005/06 World Cup season , Rainer made it into the points three times, in the European Cup he could not repeat the previous year's performances and only reached the podium once. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he was among the top ten in the World Cup for the first time. In the super combined at Beaver Creek on November 30th, he came ninth, two weeks later he even reached seventh place in the super combined on the Reiteralm - his best result so far. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre, Sweden, he finished 14th in giant slalom like two years earlier and was Swedish giant slalom champion for the second time in March of the same year.

In the next few years, the Swede only achieved a few good placements in the World Cup. In the 2007/08 season his best result was 13th place in the classic combination of Kitzbühel , in 2008/09 he came 14th in the super combination of Wengen and in the 2009/10 season he was 16th his best result in the super combination of Val-d'Isère . In the European Cup, too, Rainer only achieved a few top positions in these years. At his last major event, the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère, he finished 16th in the super combination, 20th in the downhill and 24th in the giant slalom.

After the 2009/10 season, Rainer has not made any further World Cup or European Cup appearances. He continues to take part in FIS races and the Swedish championships. At the Universiade 2011 in Erzurum , he was fifth in the giant slalom. At the end of the 2012/13 season he resigned from top-class sport.
