Nikolai Leonidowitsch Meshcheryakov
Nikolai Leonidowitsch Meschcherjakow ( Russian: Николай Леонидович Мещеряков ; born February 25, 1865 in Sarayisk ; † April 3, 1942 in Kazan ) was a Russian writer, publicist, revolutionary and censor.
As the son of an agronomist , he studied at the Technological Institute in St. Petersburg from 1885 to 1886 . In 1880 he had been politically active for the first time with the Narodnaja Wolja (Party of the People's Will). He was arrested in 1886 and exiled to Ryazan Province . He emigrated to Belgium in 1893.
He became a member of the League of Russian Social Democrats in 1901. In Belgium he was the editor of the Iskra newspaper . He then traveled to Moscow in 1902 and continued to work there for Iskra . In 1906 he became a member of the Moscow District Committee in the RSDLP . In October 1906 he was arrested again. In 1909 he was exiled to Yeniseisk . He went to Krasnoyarsk in 1913 to work as an engineer.
After the February Revolution , he was active in 1917 in the Krasnoyarsk Party Committee of the RSDLP. He also worked as a journalist for the local newspaper Krasnoyarsky Rabotschi . Back to Moscow he headed the Moscow Governorate Soviet. In Moscow he was also a member of the government committee of the RSDLP and worked for the newspaper Social Democrat . In the course of the October Revolution he worked as an editor at the Izvestia newspaper of the Moscow Governorate . After the revolution he worked for the Izvestia Mossoveta newspaper . From 1918 to 1922 he worked for the Pravda newspaper .
From 1921 to 1924 he worked at various institutions, such as the Central Consumers, the Comintern , the Krestintern and the International Agricultural Institute . In 1922 he became the first director of the Soviet censorship authority Glawlit (→ censorship in the Soviet Union ) for a short time . From 1924 he took on duties as deputy editor-in-chief of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia . From 1927 to 1938 he worked on the publication of the Small Soviet Encyclopedia . He also worked as an editor for the magazine Nauka i Schisn (Science and Life).
He also published works by Russian writers. From 1939 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1934 he published a history of the Communist Party.
