Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Gussakow ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Гусаков ; born May 14, 1934 in Petrozavodsk , † December 14, 1991 in St. Petersburg ) was a Soviet Nordic combined .

Career

Gussakow, who was married to the Olympic champion Marija Ivanovna , made his first international appearance at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . In the individual competition on the normal hill and over 15 kilometers, he took a strong seventh place. In February 1957 he reached third place at the Salpausselkä ski games in Lahti . In the same place he finished eighth at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1958 . In addition, he won the combined competition of the international ski competitions in Le Brassus in 1958 before Gunder Gundersen . He celebrated his greatest success at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley when he won the bronze medal. His mileage, which was decisive for his success after tenth place in the special jumping event, was particularly noticeable. In 1961 Gussakow became the first non-Scandinavian athlete to win at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival in Oslo . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , he finished 30th. In contrast, he narrowly missed the medal ranks as fourth at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .

At the national level, he won the Soviet championship title in 1958. In 1960 he was second in Tomsk behind Dmitri Kotschkin .

After his death in 1993, Gussakov was buried in the sand cemetery in his native town. In October 2013, a monument was inaugurated for him in Petrozavodsk.
