Nikolai von Baranoff (born May 1, 1808 in Reval , † August 6, 1863 in Weißenstein , Estonia ) was a Baltic painter and artist .

Life

Nikolai had been deaf and dumb since he was born and had lived in an institution for the deaf and dumb in Berlin from around 1817 . He studied painting in Munich and Vienna , lived temporarily in Rome and then for a longer period in Saint Petersburg , later he moved to Weißenstein. As a "free artist" he was a member of the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg.

Nikolai v. B. came from the Swedish-Russian noble family von Baranoff . His father was the Russian lieutenant colonel Joachim von Baranoff, Herr auf Wätz and Bremerfeld in the Paide parish (* 1776 in Reval; † 1862 in Weißenstein), who was married to Elisabeth Hay (1772-1852). Nikolai's cousins ​​were the Russian generals Nikolai von Baranoff (1808–1883), Johann Graf von Baranoff (1811–1884) and Paul Graf von Baranoff (1814–1864). Nikolai married Eleonore Abramowsky († 1849 in Saint Petersburg) from Elbing . Her descendants were: Karl Johann Nikolaus (born September 3, 1843 in Nuremberg ; † January 22, 1867 in Saint Petersburg) and Wilhelm Alexander Joachim (* May 2, 1846 in Saint Petersburg; † 1879 in Vienna ).

His works mainly consisted of portraits of Russian actors and actresses. He created images of saints in Saint Petersburg churches, as well as the altarpiece (1848) in the church in Weißenstein and some genre paintings .
