The Nikolaikirche

The Evangelical Lutheran Nikolaikirche is located in the rural town of Kaltennordheim in the Rhön in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

history

In 1597 the Kilian's Church at the cemetery got a big sister because the way to the cemetery hill outside the country town was too far for the believers . A second larger church was built.

To the church itself

The tower stood until 1856 on the east side close to the river Felda . Inside was the chancel . The windows and cornices showed late Gothic forms. During the Thirty Years War, the Croats raged and destroyed the town church in 1634.

Construction began in 1666, so that a used organ could be installed in 1683 . This was then replaced by a new purchase in 1702. In 1821 the galleries and larger windows could be installed. According to the chronicle , the church was first given its current name in 1821 .

Violent fires in the small town caused the church to burn down from June 21st to 24th, 1858. In 1859 the faithful received a new bell from Apolda for the burnt-out church. It was not until 1865–1867 that reconstruction began. The church was given two galleries because Kaltennordheim was a garrison town .

In 1866 it was decided to build the tower on the west side of the nave , which is what happened. The tower also received a tower clock with dials in each main direction.

In 1867 the Nikolaikirche was inaugurated with a festive service. Then the new organ and bells and chimes were installed. The church also received stained glass windows with biblical scenes.

In 1946 the tower button was removed. A precision clockwork was installed. In 1964 and 1965 the roof and the tower were re-covered.

After the political change

The church roof was re-covered and a lightning protection system was installed. In 2006 the bells were blocked due to the danger of falling and remedial action was taken immediately by converting the bell cage for 60,000 euros. The new bells received new inscriptions.
