Nikolaus Elerdt was the eldest son of pastor Bartholomäus Elerdt (* 1552) and a daughter of court preacher Joachim Pasche . In 1597 he went to school in Guben , then to Ruppin , Berlin , Brandenburg an der Havel and Zittau . In 1606 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , but could not continue his studies due to financial difficulties and in 1611 accepted an appointment as rector in Mittenwalde . On February 7, 1612 he came to the Marienkirche in Berlin as a preacher and in 1632 became provost at the Nikolaikirche .

Elerdt belongs to the circle of Lutheran theologians who moved around Paul Gerhardt . He wrote occasional poems on Johannes Coler , Petrus Vehr and others. Even the adversities of the Thirty Years' War did not leave him unscathed. When there was an uprising in Berlin in 1622 for financial reasons and the houses of respected merchants were stormed, he calmed the heated minds with his sermon Annonae charitas Marchia, or dear time of famine . His hymn O ew'ger Gott, Herr Zebaoth is in Johann Crüger's practice pietatis melica from 1661.
