Nikolaus Hansen

Nikolaus Hansen (born October 17, 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German publisher .

Life

Hansen is the son of a Hamburg merchant who ran an export company. From 1973 to 1975 he went on a two-year circumnavigation with three friends. He studied philosophy, English and history at the University of Hamburg and the University of Konstanz .

Hansen worked as a translator and editor , worked for Weissmann Verlag and was managing director and partner of the Rogner & Bernhard publishing house from 1988 to 1996 . In 1988 he was also involved in the founding of the Kellner Verlag in Hamburg as managing director and partner. In 1996 he succeeded Michael Naumann as the publisher of Rowohlt Verlag . On November 1, 1999, Peter Wilfert was put at his side. At the end of July 2000, Hansen left Rowohlt as a publisher.

In summer 2001 he founded marebuchverlag with the Swiss publisher of mare magazine , Nikolaus Gelpke , in Hamburg , and became its managing partner. At the end of 2007, Hansen left marebuchverlag . In mid-2008, Hansen took over Arche Verlag and Atrium Verlag as publisher . In 2013 Hansen left the publishers Arche and Atrium.

In 2009, Hansen, together with Peter Lohmann, was the initiator and artistic director of the “Harbor Front Literature Festival” in Hamburg with 16,000 visitors. Since then, the festival has been taking place every year in September - under the direction of Hansen, Petra Bamberger and Heinz Lehmann.

Hansen is a member of the board of directors of the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Foundation , and he is also the chairman of the jury for the award of the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize for Translators.

In 2004, Hansen was the first ever to receive a prize from the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works (VdÜ), the translator bar , a small, unique work of art. This year it was created by Wolfgang Z. Keller, a small wooden ship. In doing so, the association honored a form of designation of translators that is customary at Mare-Verlag, as literary translators have long wanted from all publishers and how it is appropriate to their status as authors . The publisher provides an example of the German translators for its foreign titles. His name appears on the cover and on the front page.
