Nikolaus Kyll (born October 23, 1904 in Algringen , Lorraine , † May 25, 1973 in Trier ) was a German folklorist and Roman Catholic priest .

Life

Nikolaus Kyll in 1904 in what was then the German Reich belonging Lorraine born. From 1926 to 1931 he studied theology and philosophy at the Trier seminary and was ordained a priest in 1931. He then worked as a chaplain in Engers and Kottenheim , from 1938 to 1940 the Bishop of Trier took a leave of absence to study folklore and archeology in Berlin , which he completed with a doctorate on the subject of the compulsions of hell and related magic books . From 1941 Kyll had to do military service as a medic and in 1945 was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was released in 1948. He then continued his practical training in pastoral care as a chaplain in Andernach and served as pastor in Pronsfeld from 1949 to 1957 , then in Butzweiler until his death .

As a theologian and folklorist, he was primarily interested in religious customs in the Eifel and the Moselle region , many of which were already disappearing, with particular attention paid to the survival of pre-Christian customs. Often he also included findings from archeology in his research . In 1967 he was awarded the Albert Steeger Prize together with Willi Münch . Kyll refused a professorship for church history at the Trier seminary because he wanted to continue to work in pastoral care.
