Nine Days is an Edson Oda film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 .

action

In a parallel dimension, which is located on a dry salt lake in a desert landscape, the souls of people inhabit small houses for nine days. Will also lives here and works as an “interviewer”. He monitors these people from multiple monitors, takes notes on everyone's behavior and records the result on video tapes. Like his colleague Kyo, he spends his days evaluating the suspended candidates in order to bring newborns to their souls. If they are seen and selected as worthy, they forget about their experiences from the interviews. For those who do not prove to be worthy, Will and Kyo give the opportunity to choose a moment in their lives that they want to relive on earth.

Candidates who take the longest time to take the test to see if their souls should be reborn include Anne, Kane, Maria, Mike, Alexander, and Emma. They are instructed to look at the contents of previously selected topics on television screens and then asked about them, with completely different answers.

production

Directed by Edson Oda , who also wrote the screenplay and previously only created short films in this capacity.

The leading role of Will was cast with Winston Duke , Benedict Wong plays his colleague Kyo. Their candidates Anne, Maria and Emma will be played by Perry Smith, Arianna Ortiz and Zazie Beetz , the candidates Kane, Mike and Alexander by Bill Skarsgård , David Rysdahl and Tony Hale . Will's favorite soul Amanda, a celebrated concert violist who dies unexpectedly, is played by Lisa Starrett .

Wyatt Garfield acted as cameraman , the set was created by Dan Hermansen . Peter Debruge from Variety compares the parallel dimension they have created with a purgatory and a “pregatory” place where souls spend their days in suspension to prove themselves. The small houses remind him of the Craftsman style .

The score was composed by Antonio Pinto .

The film premiered on January 27, 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival . In March 2020 it should be shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival . A few days before the start of the festival, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was postponed to an unknown time, including the presentation of the film.

Reviews

Peter Debruge of Variety says the film shows how difficult it is for a soul to be born and why the survivors of this gift should never take for granted. To this end, Edson Oda invented a new metaphor that shows how souls are selected for the responsibility of life. While no other film could possibly do anything about suicide, Nine Days is a haunting reminder of how lucky we are to be here and the earth is a planet full of lottery winners. The film is one of those rare works of art that invites the viewer to rethink their entire worldview or religious beliefs and thus also how to behave in life.

Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist writes that Will is a complex character to say the least, and Winston Duke gives this his rigid appearance, but also makes his compassion credible. Without Duke's presence, the movie just wouldn't work, according to Ellwood. The film critic also highlights the work of production designer Dan Hermansen , whose innovative concepts brought the "moments" arranged by Will to life in an absolutely outstanding way. Cinematographer Wyatt Garfield also does an impressive job, and the film music composed by Oda's compatriot Antonio Pinto is wonderfully sublime. Ellwood sums up, Nine Days is not only imaginative, but a kind of cinematic art that is rarely seen these days.
