Nir Oz ( Hebrew ניר עוז, German Neuland der Kraft ) is a secular kibbutz in southern Israel in the northwestern Negev desert. It extends over 20,000 dunams (= 20 square kilometers) of land and had 392 inhabitants in 2018. The kibbutz is located 25 km southwest of the city of Sderot in the immediate vicinity of the Gaza Strip and belongs to the regional administration of Eshkol . Nir Oz was founded on October 1st, 1955 as a Nachal settlement and two months later it was recognized as a kibbutz within the Kibbutz Artzi association .

economy

The kibbutz operates agriculture. In recent years, Nir Oz has become a major growing area for Israeli asparagus for export. There is also a factory in Nir Oz that makes paints and sealing materials.

Missile attacks

Because of its proximity to the Gaza Strip, Nir Oz has been the target of frequent Palestinian rocket attacks. In 2008, the Israeli army asked the kibbutz to harvest crops only at night in order to reduce the risk of attack. On June 4, 2008, a mortar shell fired from the Gaza Strip hit the paint factory, killing one worker and injuring four others. The Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.
