Nizar Rayan

Nizar Rayan (also: Nizar Ghayan ) ( Arabic نزار ريان, DMG Nizār Rayān ; * March 6, 1959 ; † January 1, 2009 in Jabaliya ) was a Palestinian military commander and one of ten leaders of Hamas .

Rayan studied in Saudi Arabia and Jordan and received a PhD in Hadith Studies in Khartoum in 1994 . He was then a professor at the Islamic University in Gaza City . In the following years he ran a movement of human shields for houses that were threatened by air raids.

Rayan belonged to the inner leadership of Hamas and was the liaison between the military and political wings of Hamas. He was killed in a bombing raid on his home by Israeli warplanes as part of Operation Cast Lead . With him, two of his four wives, four of his twelve children and another 13 family members and eleven residents of the house died. The Israeli military confirmed that the missile attack was aimed at Rayan with the aim of killing him. Rayan allegedly ordered his own son to carry out a suicide attack in the former Jewish settlement of Elei Sinai on the northern edge of the Gaza Strip in 2002 . A total of 11 people were killed in a double suicide attack on March 14, 2004. Rayan is said to be responsible for further attacks in Israel and was a close confidante of the commander of the Qassam Brigades , Ahmed al-Jabari . He also drafted the plan for the Hamas coup against Fatah in July 2007.
