# 1 Record (also known as No. 1 Record ) is the debut album by American rock band Big Star . It was released in 1972 by the Ardent Records label. Although the album was commercially unsuccessful, it influenced numerous subsequent musicians and bands such as REM and The Replacements .

background

# 1 Record is the first album by the power pop band Big Star, which was founded in Memphis in 1971 by childhood friends Alex Chilton and Chris Bell as well as Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel. The group was heavily influenced by 1960s bands like The Beatles and The Byrds . Big Stars music on # 1 Record has been described as a "synthesis of British pop and 60s-styled Los Angeles harmonies" and a "mix of power pop and acoustic ballads".

The majority of the songs on the debut were written by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, who also took turns doing the lead vocals . The bad sales of the album and disputes with Chilton led to the exit of Bell in 1972, who from then on appeared as a solo artist. He was killed in a car accident in 1978.

After the highly acclaimed successor Radio City 1974 was also unsuccessful, Andy Hummel left the band. After recording their third album Third / Sister Lovers , Big Star broke up that same year.

The debut album received very positive reviews from the press. In the list of 500 best albums of all time the music magazine Rolling Stone has # 1 Record space 434. The magazine chose Thirteen also ranked 406 of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Thirteen reached # 22 in Pitchfork's selection of the 200 best songs of the 1970s . The album was included in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die .

“The doomed quartet Big Star from Memphis offered romantic Anglo-Pop - and thus shaped the power-pop genre and the curse of the forgotten cult band. [...] No. 1 Record does not only consist of delightful details and relaxed melodies. His influence is profound, noticeable in bands like REM , Teenage Fanclub , The Posies - actually in everyone who still has a sweet, sad song to sing. "

- Stevie Chick

“The beauty of unamplified ballads like“ Thirteen ”and“ Give Me Another Chance ”merged effortlessly with the creaky guitar rock of“ Don't Lie To Me ”or“ Feel ”. The perfectly produced record consistently offered splendid melodies in connection with lyrics that weep disdained love and lost innocence. "

- Hugh Wilson

There are cover versions of some of the songs on the album by well-known musicians, including Thirteen ( Wilco , Garbage , Håkan Hellström , Elliott Smith , Hole ) and The Ballad of El Goodo ( Counting Crows , Evan Dando ). Cover versions of In the Street were used as the theme songs of the sitcom The Wild Seventies .
